Military History Conferences

Annual military history conferences are sponsored by the council.  They take place at different sites around the country and are usually planned for the second Wednesday through Saturday of May.  These three-day events include the presentation of upward to 30 papers on military history subjects, five meals with speakers and chartered bus field trips to sometimes unusual and inaccessible historic sites and military installations.

While members register on Wednesday afternoon, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors meet to conduct the organization's business.  An evening welcome session and reception gives everyone an opportunity to get acquainted with new members and renew old friendships.

Each conference day usually begins about 8:00 am with paper presentations in the hotel's conference rooms.  Twenty-minute presentations are carried out in two or three concurring sessions so there are a variety of lectures available to meet the interest of all members.

Before noon everyone boards air conditioned buses for the first site visit and lunch.  After an afternoon of touring military installations the buses return to the hotel about 5:00 pm so that everyone can get ready for the evening event.

Thursday's evening activity has traditionally been a dinner co-sponsored by the Society of Military History.  On Friday, the Yount-Windsor book auction begins a half-hour after the buses return to the hotel.  A formal dinner with speaker is the highlight of Saturday evening that concludes with the general membership meeting and report of officers and committees.

We always include a separate add-on trip for members who wish to spend more time learning about the area's military history.  These trips usually visit sites that are too far from the hotel to include in the regular conference and a smaller group size normally allows more time to study the sites in detail.
